You probaly heard that some pets are not allowed in Islam. We know this because some of us Muslims are taught this all the time. But this is not true. While Muslims do not say against any other animal as a pet, they fiercely reject the dogs. Because of this sad fact, dogs are wild in the Muslim world except in some moderate states. All of this because in the Hadiths(Muhammad's "sayings") it is said;

Narrated Abu Huraira: God's Messenger said, "Whoever keeps a dog, one Qirat of the reward of his good deeds is deducted daily, unless the dog is used for guarding a farm or cattle." Abu Huraira (in another narration) said from the Prophet, "unless it is used for guarding sheep or farms, or for hunting." Narrated Abu Hazim from Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "A dog for guarding cattle or for hunting." BUKHARI, Volume 3, Book 39, Number 515.

Because of this Hadith and others like it, Muslims have long stayed away from the dogs. However, a quick visit to God's Word will teach us differently:

And you might think them awake while they were asleep and We turned them about to the right and to the left, while their dog(lay) outstretching its paws at the entrance; if you looked at them you would certainly turn back from them in flight, and you would certainly be filled with awe because of them. Surrat ul Kahf, 18.18

The story talks about a group of believers who lived the first century. They are said to have been followers of Jesus(his desciples?) Anyway, they are recognized as the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus. See their whole story in Surrat ul Kahf. But the point is, the story mentions of Muslims who have a dog with them. If God was going to tell us that dogs are bad, why does not God tells us right there "Oh, by the way, Believers, dogs are not good, so stay away from them"?

But one of the most contradicting of all hadiths is the following;

Narrated Abu Huraira: God's Messenger said, "If a dog drinks from the utensil of anyone of you it is essential to wash it seven times." BUKHARI, Volume 1, Book 4, Number 173.

So, the dog's mouth is so dirty that if drinks from our untensils, we need to wash them seven times? HA! Well, look at the following Quranic verse;

They ask you as to what is allowed to them. Say: "The good things are allowed to you, and what you have taught the dogs and birds of prey, training them to hunt-- you teach them of what God has taught you-- so eat of that which they catch for you and mention the name of God over it; and be careful of (your duty to) God;" surely God is swift in reckoning. Surrat ul Maa'idah, 5.04

Well, to us, the choice is clear; We follow God over any cocamae stories the people make up, as they go along, against God and His Messenger. Would you ponder over the point of keeping the utensils away from the dogs' mouths while you let them hunt for you with their mouth(unless dogs pick up their prey with their legs and arms!)

So, for those who still are not satisfied, read and study the chapter called the Cave(Kahf, surrah 18) And after that, Bless the LORD and adopt a pet today.
