Art & Photography

Art and Photography! Yet another hot issue issue in the Muslim World. You ask any traditional Muslim, he will tell you: "Oh, Islam forbids art and photography!" Yep, You heard it right! But is this so? Of course, we will examine it. As usual, the traditional Muslim relies on the Hadiths. In the Hadiths, its said that the Angels do not enter upon a house which contains either a dog or a picture, or tasweer in `Arabic, as it says:

Narrated Salim's father: Once Gabriel promised the Prophet (that he would visit him, but Gabriel did not come) and later on he said, "We, angels, do not enter a house which contains a picture or a dog." BUKHARI, Volume 4, Book 54, Number 450.

Wow, Angels must not enter upon billions of houses then. By the way, there are millions and millions of Muslims who either get a newspaper or have a television(Wonder how Angels must pass by such believers.) We told you that you would love this. There is more:

Narrated Abu Zur'a: I entered a house in Medina with Abu Huraira, and he saw a man making pictures at the top of the house. Abu Huraira said, "I heard God's Apostle saying that God said, 'Who would be more unjust than the one who tries to create the like of My creatures? Let them create a grain: let them create a gnat.' "Abu Huraira then asked for a water container and washed his arms up to his armpits. I said, "0 Abu Huraira, Is this something you have heard from God's Apostle?" He said, "The limit for ablution is up to the place where the ornaments will reach on the Day of Resurrection.'" BUKHARI, Volume 7, Book 72, Number 837.

Oh, this is comedy! A God goes and reveals a whole religious Book. The Book, the Quran, mentions little things as even how to do ablution. However, such great Book leaves out something so great as Art out of it and later mentions it to the Prophet! Oh, what a comedy! Oh, no, we are not done with the Hadiths yet:

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The Prophet said, "The painters of these pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them, 'Make alive what you have created.'" BUKHARI, Volume 9, Book 93, Number 647.

It is so funny how alot are said for God and His Messenger in the Hadiths which have NO base in the Quran. Pure fabrications. One of the funniest thing is, the current people of the traditional Muslims allow motion pictures and pictures for news. The Quran says something to this, though:

See how they lie against their own souls, and that which they forged has passed away from them. Surrat ul An`aam, 6:24.

Yeah, passed away alright! When the traditionalists realized that Art is part of life, they simply picked and chose what suited them. How romantic! Well, Islam has nothing against Art or Photography. They are part of life. There is not one verse in the Quran that even suggests Art or Photography are haram. We dare the traditionalist to find it and send it to us! Until then, O Believers, enjoy life.
